The present painting‘s landscape setting was done by Jan Brueghel the Younger, while the figures are by the hand of Pieter Avont. Jan Brueghel and Pieter van Avont worked together frequently, with Pieter van Avont commonly doing the figural staffage for Jan Brueghel‘s landscapes and the latter painting the landscape backgrounds for Pieter van Avont‘s figural scenes. The Vienna Kunsthistorisches Museum preserves two such joint products by the two artists (a detail of one of them is reproduced in this catalogue).
Certificate: Dr. Klaus Ertz, 22 July 2005, as an autograph work by Jan Brueghel the Younger and Pieter van Avont. Dr. Ertz is going to include and reproduce the painting in the supplement to his 1984 catalogue raisonné on Jan Brueghel the Younger.
